Strategic Objectives of Compass Group

Compass Group, a global contract catering and support services company, has multiple strategic objectives.

A major strategic objective is sectorisation at scale, tailoring its food and support services to specific clients to capture market share in the global food services industry (Compass Group PLC, 2025a, pp. 4). Compass operates a decentralised and flexible model that targets specialised investments in specific industry sectors, an approach that helps optimise local contract value returns for diverse client budgets (Donnelly, 2026).

Embedded in Compass’s comprehensive "Our Planet Promise" framework is the sustainable transformation that has become an intrinsic strategic objective. Compass’s target to achieve climate net zero across its global operations is reinforced by linking food waste related KPIs to the annual appraisal of senior management (Compass Group PLC, 2024, pp. 8, 13, 34).

Compass’s adoption of AI, digital transformation, and innovation has strengthened service customisation, reduced climate impact, extended its portfolio of offers, intensified competitive differentiation, increased client retention, and supported its ongoing international expansion and capacity to scale (Compass Group PLC, 2025a, pp. 1, 2, 6, 29).

Methods Used to Assess How Teams Meet Objectives

As Compass’s Delivery Manager, I am accountable for my team’s appraisals and for measuring team performance against strategic objectives through benchmarked methods.

Compass Group operates at CMMI Level 3, supported by the use of the MAP Framework (Compass Group PLC, 2024, pp. 4), the Mapping for Value (MfV) simulation platform (ProfitAbility, 2026), and Compass's HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) digital logs and health and safety compliance audits (Compass Group PLC, 2022).

Compass Group’s Level 3 maturity is enabled by both quantitative and qualitative corporate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which are used to measure team performance against corporate strategic objectives (Helix Operations, 2024; Compass Group PLC, 2024 pp. 7, 42, 48, 51).

A standardised, documented corporate process with unified KPIs and a shared digital platform ensures that every manager evaluates success in a consistent way, reinforced through standardised audits (Compass Group PLC, 2025b pp. 16; Compass Group PLC, 2026b; Origami Risk; 2026). Goals are tied to compliance with internal standards and policies, alongside international regulations and standards such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 (Compass Group PLC, 2026b, pp. 28; Compass Group, 2026d; Compass Group België, 2024).

The team’s goals are based on clear standards and processes, and continuous monitoring sustains lean operations. When a deviation from defined corporate processes or inadequate coverage of KPIs is uncovered, a root cause analysis (RCA) is executed and remediation actions are applied to permanently eliminate recurrence, henceforth improving the business processes and standards and iteratively optimising the Business Management System (BMS) (Compass Group PLC 2026a; Compass Group PLC, 2026b, pp. 8, 9, 25; Compass Group, 2026).

SMART Team Goals Breakdown

  • Specific: Standards provide exact processes to follow.
  • Measurable: Continuous internal and external audits generate team-level audit scores.
  • Achievable: ISO standards are practically evidence-based guidance for operational procedures.
  • Realistic: Grounded in validated operational capabilities and proven industry frameworks.
  • Time-bound: Internal audits are scheduled quarterly or bi-annually, providing teams with discrete schedules and milestones (Boogaard, K. 2023, Compass Group PLC, 2026b).

MAP Framework & Balanced Scorecard (BSC) Mapping

Compass’s Management and Performance (MAP) framework is a structural management methodology utilised company-wide to drive operational efficiency and financial discipline across all 40 countries of operation (Compass Group PLC, 2022, pp. 1, 39; Compass Group PLC, 2023, pp. 5, 6). The MAP framework maps directly onto the four traditional perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC):

  • Financial Perspective: MAP 1, MAP 2, MAP 3
  • Customer Perspective: MAP 1, MAP 2
  • Internal Business Processes: MAP 2, MAP 3
  • Learning and Growth: Supported through Compass’s Mapping for Value (MfV) business simulation game, which transforms the key concepts of the MAP framework into a highly interactive and competitive workshop (ProfitAbility, 2026; Compass Group PLC, 2024, pp. 4).

Evaluation of the Sophistication of Listed Methods

The scope of this section is to assess the sophistication of the team performance evaluation methods, used or recommended, in supporting strategic goals.

The decentralised structure supported by the MAP framework, mapped into BSC perspectives through competitive workshops, MfV business simulation games, and lean internal business processes improvement, allows intrapreneurial conduct for teams, supported by standards, leading to performance prediction and micro-strategy corrections (Compass Group PLC, 2024, pp. 6).

When teams fail to reach KPIs or breach internal or ISO standards, CMMI Level 3’s use of standard processes provides a sophisticated diagnostic mechanism, enabling root cause analysis (RCA) to identify process deviations, prevent recurring issues, and refine the process (CMMI Institute, 2025).

Synthesis: ISO standards, KPIs, and RCA interlock seamlessly to strengthen the SMART goals set for teams. ISO and internal standards provide the process benchmark, KPIs continually validate the baseline compliance and target realisation, and RCA works as the investigation and corrective mechanism. Together they form a sophisticated mechanism to improve the operational compliance of the Business Management System (BMS) and meet the financial targets of the MAP framework.

All methods listed help Compass Group to set up strategic objectives and achieve them through sophisticated team goals, supporting a decentralised structure while maintaining consistent multi-country operations.

A Team’s Performance Plan with Respect to the Organisation’s Strategic Objectives

The team under study is the AI transformation and adoption team across the group, integrated into the IT technical department. Its performance parameters are tightly related to the achievement of Compass’s strategic objectives:
